Keep it coming on1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() The ongoing Blue-ification of Twitter has become a bigger problem lately. Putting up more and bigger obstacles to potential eyeballs seems like the opposite of what you should want to do. Even a dope like me knows that the way to grow your business is to get people to use it, especially a business whose ultimate goal is to sell eyeballs to advertisers, and that aspires to be the world’s public square. Perhaps, although it makes the average non-Twitter rando less likely to browse and think, “hey, I should get on that”-and therefore fail to see the ads that will appear within it. ![]() This embedding feature is used by quite literally millions of websites around the Internets, but Elon has disabled it, requiring anybody who looks at Twitter to be logged into Twitter-which he claims is for security reasons. Welp, Twitter has 86d the widget that allowed me to post my latest tweets here, either in the right-hand column if you’re viewing on a computer or at the bottom if you’re on mobile. So now then: in keeping with annual custom, some of my favorite posts between last July 11 and now are on the flip. (I will shamelessly say, however, that if you are moved to send a few shekels to defray my modest website expenses, as a couple amongst the readership have been kind enough to do, there’s a PayPal link here.) After giving it away for nearly two decades to the small number of friends and fans who consume it, it wouldn’t be right to start charging for it. I have been told I should take this site to a paying platform like Substack, but I’m not going to do that. I don’t like to call it a blog anymore, since the term is out of fashion, but I’ll use it once again to make a point: 19 years is eternity-plus in blog-time, considering that historically, 80 to 90 percent of blogs (and blog-like sites at Substack, Medium, and elsewhere) don’t last more than a year or two.Ī lot of such sites go tits-up quickly because the writers expect to make money, and they don’t. ![]()
